PACKAGING BUYING GUIDE
How to Plan Custom Cosmetics Packaging: Carton, Rigid Box and Gift Set
A cosmetics packaging brief becomes more useful when it starts with the finished product and buying journey, rather than only a reference image.

Start with the finished cosmetic product
Collect the finished bottle, jar, compact or palette dimensions, including caps, pumps and any components that change the real height or width. Include photos and the product weight when available. This helps establish the internal space and whether a simple carton, a premium rigid box or a fitted insert should be discussed.
Choose the job of the packaging
For an individual retail item, a folding carton may be the most direct starting point. A hero launch, set or gifting project may call for a rigid, magnetic or drawer structure. When a retail package travels by parcel, the delivery layer should be planned separately from the presentation layer.
Plan information before artwork is locked
Cosmetics packaging can carry product, shade, usage or other required information. List the content and identify the panels it needs before the carton structure and artwork are finalized. This avoids treating the panel layout as an afterthought.
Use inserts only where they solve a real need
An insert can hold several products in a defined position, support a bottle during a gift-box reveal or make a set easier to pack consistently. The product shape, material and delivery route determine whether paperboard, EVA, molded pulp or a divider is the right starting point.
Prepare a sample brief
Send product dimensions, photos, artwork status, set components, quantity, destination and a description of how the package will be sold or delivered. A sample can then review the fit, opening sequence, panel layout and finish before bulk approval.
